The Jouhikko is a traditional lyre with 2 to 4 strings, originating from Finland, Sweden, and Estonia. Also known as the jouhikantele, its name is derived from the bowed kantele. The strings of the Jouhikko can be crafted from various materials, including horsehair, sheep gut, or nylon, and the instrument is available in a range of sizes, from soprano to bass. Each Jouhikko is accompanied by a bow for playing.
This specific soprano-sized Jouhikko is expertly crafted from mahogany, featuring a top made of 100-year-old pine. It is equipped with maple tuning pegs and bridge, while the tailpiece is made from outstanding wenge. The instrument is strung with straight black nylon strings and comes complete with a bow made of horsehair, ensuring a rich and authentic sound.
