The Jouhikko is a traditional lyre with 2 to 4 strings, originating from Finland, Sweden, and Estonia. Also known as the jouhikantele, its name is derived from the bowed kantele. The strings of a Jouhikko can be crafted from materials such as horsehair, sheep gut, or nylon. These instruments are available in a range of sizes, from soprano to bass, and are played with a bow.
This particular pro alto-sized Jouhikko is crafted from flaming birch with a spruce top, offering a rich and resonant sound. It features sculpted maple tuning pegs, along with a bridge and tailpiece made of venge wood. The instrument is strung with straight black nylon strings and comes complete with a bow strung with horsehair, ensuring a traditional and authentic playing experience.
